Samsung is poised to get a piece of the wearable technology pie with a smart watch device called the Galaxy Gear. The news was revealed with the filing for a U.S. trademark for the name “Samsung Galaxy Gear”.
Samsung acknowledged earlier this year that it was looking into producing a smart watch device. The description associated with the patent says that the Galaxy Gear will be: “wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band, or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages.” The patent filing also says the device could be used for “the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.”
The Galaxy branding suggests that the Galaxy Gear could work exclusively with Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
The report comes as rumors of a iWatch from Apple is due later this year or in early 2014. Samsung has been battling Apple for market share in the smartphone and tablet markets.
